Overview
Effective strategies for regional development

The Australian government has committed to strengthening regional Australia through local empowerment: A system where regional voices are heard at all levels of government and decision-making is situated closer to the people affected.

This 'new paradigm' will only be realised through improved collaboration across governments, communities and industries. Only through effective partnerships can we produce the right outcomes for regional development. Unlocking the Economic & Social Potential of Regional Australia will present strategies that support best practice in regional policy and economic development.

It will cover planning for sustainable development, diversifying regional industries and building a viable digital economy, with particular a focus on the delivery of health, infrastructure, education, employment services and the role of the private sector.

"All Australians, regardless of where they live or where they choose to live, want the opportunity to work, they want quality education and health services for their families, they want community amenities and they want a vibrant cultural life."

The Honorary Simon Crean, 29th September 2010
